India's Endowment: Unlocking the Potential of National Resources
India is a treasure trove of natural resources, boasting an impressive array of minerals, energy sources, and water reserves. This vast endowment is a foundation for the country's economic growth, industrial development, and environmental sustainability. The National Resources of India play a crucial role in shaping the nation's destiny, and it is essential to comprehend the magnitude, diversity, and complexity of these resources.
India's Energy Landscape:
India has made significant strides in harnessing the vast potential of its energy resources, both renewable and non-renewable. The country has seen a massive expansion in the production and utilization of coal, oil, and natural gas, while simultaneously focusing on the development of renewable energy sources. The Indian government has implemented policies to promote solar energy, wind power, and hydroelectricity, with an aim to reduce the country's dependence on fossil fuels. Shri Piyush Goyal, Former Minister of State with Independent Charge of Power and Coal, Ministry of Power, quoted, " India's commitment to renewable energy is a key indicator of our resolve to promote sustainable development and reduce carbon emissions."
Key National Resources of India
India is endowed with a diverse range of natural resources, categorized into three main groups:
1.
Mineral Resources:
India is one of the world's top producers of several minerals. The country has abundant deposits of coal, bauxite, copper, iron ore, and lignite. The 2020 report by the Ministry of Mines states that coal reserves in India stood at 301 billion tonnes, with country's rich coal deposits being found in the states of Jharkhand, Odisha, and Chhattisgarh.
India's iron ore reserves comprise approximately 28 per cent of the world's total, with the majority of the reserves found in the states of Odisha and Goa.
Copper, on the other hand, ranks second among non-ferrous metals and is largely exploited in the state of Madhya Pradesh.
India is the 4th largest producer of coal globally and has been considering coal-bed methane extraction as an additional revenue stream. In various regions, India has large deposits of many valuable gemstones too, which adds to the country's huge mineral wealth face.
2.
Energy Resources:
India has rich deposits of coal, oil, and natural gas. The country also boasts significant renewable energy potential in the form of solar energy and hydroelectric power.
The accessed operational coal power plants is approximately 433, with a total installed capacity of 237,446.05 MW as of 01-03-2023, according to CEA (Central Electricity Authority), as reported in the recently found plan of 25YFP (25 Year Framework Plan). The country aims to increase its nuclear power generating capacity by approximately 16,000 MW to meet the increasing energy demands.
3.
Water Resources:Hydro Pensources
India has the second-largest installed hydroelectric power capacity in the world, with over 50 GW of hydel power. The country has strong potential for hydropower development, with many large and medium-sized rivers and streams offering suitable sites for hydroelectric power production. However, less than 20 GW of this potential is currently harnessed. The country has vast share of hydro energy potential among BRICS nations.
India ranks second in Asia and Eleventh in the world regarding hydroelectric potential. The Indian Government offers different sorts of financial and political advantages for establishing hydropower plants, nonetheless, full potential has not been harnessed yet. Corporate involvement and expert collaboration will greatly enhance the nation's hydro power agenda. Fortunately, projects like the Western Bhimp.HCM multiplier UP scheme are being initiated, and scheduled achievement timelines have been fictionalized.
4.
Mineral based Industrial Policy
The success of National Mineral Policy, owes a lot to the added package that is, Mineral Based Industries Growth Plan propel that has been coordinated by DPIIT (Department of Promotion for Industrial and Internal Trade), MOSPI (Ministry Of Statistics And Programme Implementation), and Chemicals and Petro Chemicals, and initiated and supported by M o I and C. their governing lines emphasize: Design and promote technology up gradation, Value addition and Alternative processing aids. The Challenges Ahead
India's national resources face significant challenges that hinder their optimal exploitation and utilization. These challenges include:
•
EnvironmentalConcerns:
India's rapid industrialization and urbanization have led to environmental degradation, impacting national resources and the overall ecosystem.
